Responsibility to Protect Protocol (UN Protocol)

"Sovereignty no longer exclusively protects States from foreign interference; it is a charge of responsibility that holds States accountable for the welfare of their people."

3 pillars of the Responsibility to Protect:
  1. The State carries the primary responsibility for protecting populations from genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing, and their incitement;
  2. The international community has a responsibility to encourage and assist States in fulfilling this responsibility;
  3. The international community has a responsibility to use appropriate diplomatic, humanitarian and other means to protect populations from these crimes. If a State is manifestly failing to protect its populations, the international community must be prepared to take collective action to protect populations, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.

Present day issues to consider: Crisis in Syria, NATO intervention in Iraq to protect Kurds from ISIS, unrest during Ebola outbreak,

Assignment: THE AID PARADOX
Work in a group of 3. Use a googledoc to record your ideas and present your conclusions. You will be sharing this with the class. You are going to have investigate www.gapminder.org at home.

1.Select a recipient of aid. Use www.aidflows.org to find recipients. You do not have to use an African nation!!!
Watch this video on 'airflows' before you begin:


2.Analyse data on the aid received by that country by looking at charts and graphs on www.oecd.org , www.devinit.org , http://data.worldbank.org and aidflows. A thorough analysis would include checking into www.gapminder.org to create a graph using indicators specific to the data you would like to evaluate from oecd and aidflows. You should consider measures such as the Millenium Development Goals and the Human Development Index and world development indicators in your analysis to determine the success of the donations. Use your class time wisely to investigate these sights so you can ask questions as they arise.

3.Include the geographic location of your country. Maps require accurate titles.

4.Is the AID PARADOX evident in your country? Identify any relevant cultural factors that would lead you to be able to evaluate the success of aid donated to your country of choice. Share your judgement as to whether these cultural factors help or hinder aid donations.

So... you are writing an evaluation on the success of aid donorship to a specific nation. Include graphs and/or charts in your explanation. Cite any visuals in size 9 font beneath the visual. Type in a 12 font. You do not need a bibliography. Title your work appropriately. Put both your first and last names on the document. This will be evaluated in all categories each out of 10. A rubric will be posted for you.

Hunger Count 2013 Questions:
1. What is the hunger count? What does it seek to do?
2. What is the difference between a food bank and a meal and snack program?
3. What are the causes of hunger in Canada? (Root causes?)
4. Are food banks controversial? What qualifies someone to receive food? Who defines who should have access to food banks?
5. Is the Canadian government doing enough to combat hunger in Canada? Around the world? Does Canada have a responsibility to help solve world hunger?
6. Who defines what “starving” is? Definition or personal? Is hunger the problem or is it part of a wider more political/environmental system?
7. More food banks or more programs/support groups/jobs? Which is more realistic? Which is more sustainable?

THE AID PARADOX
1.Select a recipient of aid. Use www.aidflows.org to find recipients. You do not have to use an African nation!!!

2.Analyse data on the aid received by that country by looking at charts and graphs on www.oecd.org , www.devinit.org and aidflows. A thorough analysis would include checking into www.gapminder.org to create a graph using indicators specific to the data you would like to evaluate from oecd and aidflows. You should consider measures such as the Millenium Development Goals and the Human Development Index in your analysis to determine the success of the donations. Use your class time wisely to investigate these sights so you can ask Mr. Switzer and I questions as they arise.

3.Include the geographic location of your country. Maps require accurate titles.

4.Identify any relevant cultural factors that would lead you to be able to evaluate the success of aid donated to your country of choice. Share your judgement as to whether these cultural factors help or hinder aid donations.

So... you are writing an evaluation on the success of aid donorship to a specific nation. Include graphs and/or charts in your explanation. Cite any visuals in size 9 font beneath the visual. Type in a 12 font. You do not need a bibliography. title your work appropriately. Put both your first and last name on the paper. This will be evaluated in all categories each out of 10. A rubric will be posted for you.

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
An environmental issues is only an issue because it is directly connected to people, economies and politics. There are always various perspectives on resolutions as to how to solve these issues.

PART A- INQUIRY ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE
1.Pick your group members (2 - 5 maximum). You may work alone.
2.Your topic will be assigned to you.
3.Watch a short video, read an article or listen to a podcast about your assigned issue.
4.Draft 4 questions for which you will conduct an inquiry to resolve the issue:
You must have 1 of each – environmental, social, political and economic question
(These question will form the organization of your film)

PART B – APPLICATION
Create an educational yet entertaining (not slap happy) resource which:
  • outlines the political, social, environmental and economic aspects of the issue;
  • include the concepts of sustainable development and globalization;
  • all footage must be authentic. You can interview, peers, parents, strangers, teachers … . You can include on-line images however most of your visual content should be original;
  • must include local, national and global connections;
  • offers a plausible resolution;
  • demonstrates your understanding of the key learnings of the course.
Choices include:
  • Movie trailer (3 minutes authentic footage)
  • Reality Documentary aka Michael moore (authentic footage)
  • Series of commercials (3-4 of 30 seconds – different perspectives)
  • Radio scripted debate/show/discussion with opposing viewpoints and a host/mediator
  • TV at issue panel with mediator
  • Rant 1/person depending on size of the group
